Thornton Announces Commitment to Support Term Limits

Dee Thornton has signed a pledge stating that if elected in her 2020 race for the House of Representatives, Thornton will support a Constitutional Amendment placing term limits on members of Congress. The so called “Term Limits Pledge” has been signed by over 60 members of the 116th Congress including 3 from Indiana (Both Senators Braun and Young and Representative Hollingsworth from the 9th district). It states that the amendment would limit members of the House to 3 terms and Senators would be limited to 2 terms.

“I pledge that as a member of Congress I will cosponsor and vote for the U.S. Term Limits amendment of three (3) House terms and two (2) Senate terms and no longer limit.”

Thornton also says that it is clear her constituents are in large support of term limits and that’s why she decided to take the pledge. She also believes that term limits are key to keeping representatives accountable to their constituency-- they would be worried about working for results instead of keeping the people that keep them in power happy.

A non-partisan poll in 2018 showed that 82% of voters would support an amendment of this kind. While many states have term limits individually, no limit exists at the federal level. Indiana is not a state that utilizes term limits. While those opposed to the amendment believe that voting an incumbent out is a natural term limit, supporters believe that term limits are necessary as incumbents wield an unfair advantage of power and money over their opponents.
